Tsukisamu Anpan: Kabocha Pumpkin Red Bean

Tsukisamu Anpan: Kabocha Pumpkin

Manufacturer: Honma
Common Allergens: Eggs, Wheat
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Hokkaido
Snack is: Sweet
Vegetarian: Yes

Pumpkin is one of those flavors that perfectly embodies autumn. Japanese pumpkin, also known as kabocha, is the star of this delicious anpan. For those new to anpan, it’s a sweet roll with a filling (most commonly red bean) that in this case is a white bean paste mixed with kabocha filling. Since anpan can be quite dense, it’s best enjoyed sliced into smaller pieces and eaten with a cup of tea. To elevate this anpan to the next taste level, we recommend removing the wrapping and baking this anpan in the oven for a few minutes before biting into its freshly crispy baked bun.

Kurumi Walnut Mochi

A great start for any person new to the adorably squishy joys of mochi. With a light flavor and interesting texture from the addition of chopped walnuts kneaded throughout the dough, this little rectangular mochi will make a mochi-lover out of you! We love the faint notes of soy sauce that tangoes with the sugary coating. You’ll go nuts for this mochi with how warm and fuzzy it’ll get you feeling, right in time for the autumn!

Kinako Kurumi Walnut Mochi

Kinako Kurumi Walnut Mochi

Manufacturer: Kubota Seika
Common Allergens: Tree nuts, Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Nagano Prefecture

Lovingly dusted with kinako (roasted soybean) powder, this mochi is made with and contains little bits of kurumi (walnuts) in them! Soft and stretchy, this mochi is just the right start to the beginning of the autumn months with its deep, nutty flavor from the combined power of the kinako and walnut. For more intensity, a good dose of soy sauce is also added to the dough for a little unexpected saltiness. A bit heavier in flavor than the Kurumi Walnut Mochi; which one do you like better?

Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs: Annou Imo Sweet Potato

Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs: Annou Imo Sweet Potato

Manufacturer: Echigo Seika
Common Allergens: Milk, Soy

Nothing says autumn like the rich, sweet flavor of a freshly roasted sweet potato! This special fall flavor of our favorite mochi puffs is a stunning recreation of this fall staple. The first taste is sweet like brown sugar but quickly melds into a buttery delight as it melts away. The complex sweetness of sweet potato is hard to describe, but do we need to when this puff so perfectly captures its flavor? Rich in flavor yet light in texture, these mysterious mochi puffs have wowed us again!

Kakimochi Mochi Rice Crackers: Kobukaki

Kakimochi Mochi Rice Crackers: Kobukaki

Manufacturer: Hinodeya Seika
Common Allergens: Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Mie Prefecture
Snack is: Savory
Vegetarian: Yes

This savory rice cracker features kombu (seaweed) from Hidaka in Hokkaido, which is famous for its high quality kelp. You can see flecks of this umami-rich ingredient baked into each cracker along with soy sauce and salt for an addictingly savory taste. It’s actually kombu that led to the discovery of umami, the fifth flavor. Kombu’s popularity in cooking and snacks is due to its ability to enhance the other flavors in a dish without taking the spotlight. Here, though kombu is a fun guest star, the flavor of rice shines through. This beloved grain is the bedrock of the Japanese diet and has two harvest periods throughout the year: one in spring, and one in fall.

Organic Hojicha Tea

Organic Hojicha Tea

Manufacturer: Bokksu
Common Allergens: None
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Kagoshima Prefecture
Vegetarian: Yes
Caffeine Content: Low

A nice warm brew is just what chilly weather calls for. Hojicha is made by roasting sencha green tea, which lowers caffeine content and adds a toasty roasted flavor. This Organic Hojicha is a little on the lighter side in terms of flavor, making it perfect for pairing with both sweet and savory foods. WIthout overpowering the flavors of the snacks it accompanies, it gently cleanses the palette with each sip.

Koucha Black Tea Donut

Kocha Black Tea Donut

Vegetarian: Yes

This delicious doughnut is the fall dessert of our dreams. Black tea leaves are infused into the batter to create a dense, creamy donut that melts in your mouth to reveal the aromatic flavor of Royal Milk Tea. As black tea has a more floral flavor, we recommend pairing this doughnut with an earthy tea like this month’s roasted hojicha.

Kinoko no Manma Eringi Mushroom Chips: Butter + Soy Sauce Flavor

Kinoko no Manma Eringi Mushroom Chips: Butter + Soy Sauce Flavor

Manufacturer: UHA Mikakuto
Common Allergens: Milk, Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Osaka
Snack is: Savory
Vegetarian: Yes

These unique chips are made with slices of umami-rich eringi (King Oyster Mushroom). Seasoned with butter and soy sauce, this chip’s delicate mushroom flavor greets you at the end of each bite. Though the slices of mushroom seem thick, they’re surprisingly light and have a satisfying crunch. The eringi mushroom is popular in Japan for its meaty stem and is a great substitute for meat in vegetarian dishes. It’s delicious when sauteed or grilled, but we think this tasty chip is our favorite way to enjoy eringi!

Danran Okaki Rice Crackers: Uni

Danran Okaki Rice Cracker: Uni

Manufacturer: Maruhiko Seika
Common Allergens: Crustacean shellfish, Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: Alcohol
Product of: Tochigi Prefecture

This fried rice cracker really hits the spot with its rich, buttery flavor. Thick yet light, this cracker proudly boasts 100% domestically grown Japanese rice. After being fried to perfection, each cracker is generously drizzled with uni(sea urchin)-flavored sauce to impart the cracker with uni’s signature buttery flavor. In Japan, uni is harvested between September and April, making this the perfect time to discover this seasonal delight. Though uni is sometimes a controversial flavor, we love this buttery, briny jewel of the sea, and this rice cracker is a great way to try it if you’ve never had it before.

A local delicacy popular in the fall and winter from Miyagi’s capital city Sendai inspired this snack: noodles with beef tongue. Don’t shy away from this unique flavor, which also includes a good dose of black pepper for kick!
