Best Japanese Mochi Snacks of 2023

by Dallas Ernst

Freshly made Mochi, rice cake.Japanese food.

Mochi is a traditional Japanese snack composed of a sticky rice cake made with glutinous rice called mochigome. Despite the presence of this glutinous rice, mochi are gluten free unless otherwise indicated and are often vegan depending on the filling.

The Japanese word mochimochi translates to “chewy,” “springy,” or “elastic” which all accurately describe the unique texture of mochi. Mochi are a traditional Japanese snack to celebrate the new year because they are symbolic for holding on to good luck, but they are also enjoyed all-year round and have become a popular snack outside of Japan. There are many different types of mochi and different methods for making mochi, which makes sense because mochi is such a wonderful vehicle for a variety of flavors and textures. Mochi are known for being colorful, typically sweet, and filled with something like jelly, bean paste, or even ice cream!

Here at Bokksu, we offer a variety of Japanese mochi-inspired snacks, featuring regionally and seasonally inspired flavors while introducing new additions and bringing back old favorites. And so, we wanted to take a moment to look back at the past year of snacks and share some of the highlights.

From this year's best sellers to our personal favorites and a few new discoveries, check out this list for a round-up of our most popular Japanese mochi brands and flavors that we enjoyed in 2023.

Matcha Chocolate Daifuku Mochi

Mochi Mochi Chocolate: Mont Blanc is a top japanese mochi brand

This Japanese treat is a type of daifuku or stuffed mochi. The dough used to make the exterior of Matcha Chocolate Daifuku Mochi is flavored with green tea matcha powder, making it a pretty green color while imparting some iconic matcha flavor.

These mochi are also filled with a silky white chocolate cream, making it a true stuffed mochi. We love the balance of white chocolate and matcha—and so this mochi gets an A+ in our book.

Dried Persimmon Mochi

Dried Persimmon Mochi

This sweet and squishy mochi is flavored with hoshigaki, or dried persimmon, a fruit that tastes like honey and cinnamon! Hoshigaki has been produced for over 1000 years! We hope you taste the rich history in every bite of this orange treat.

Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs: Hokkaido Cheese

Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs: Hokkaido Cheese

These puffy, melt-in-your-mouth mochi are a real treat. Covered in a sweet, creamy Hokkaido cheese coating, these mochi taste like heaven.

Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs: Hokkaido Cheese stands out among other mochi thanks to their crisp, airy texture. Its signature lighter-than-air, melt-in-your-mouth texture is made by a unique patented process that’s Echigo Seika’s carefully guarded secret. This savory snack is flavored with cheese from Hokkaido, the premier region for dairy in all of Japan. Hokkaido makes up a fourth of the farmable land in Japan and produces over 50% of the country’s cheese. As this puff melts away in your mouth, all that remains is the deliciously cheesy flavor!

Boasting the perfect balance between texture and flavor, nothing satisfies a snack craving quite like a mochi. Whether you prefer chocolatey or fruity flavors, there’s a Japanese mochi snack for you. Don’t just take our word for it—go for a fan-favorite mochi snack.
