Gudetama is an adorable, anthropomorphic egg yolk that embodies laziness. Created by Sanrio, the same people who brought us Hello Kitty, Gudetama is an iconic character, appearing as emoticons, in memes, and starring in short videos on YouTube. Gudetama is a part of Japan’s kawaii (cute) popular culture movement. The lovable egg yolk appears on all kinds of merchandise, from kitchen and office accessories to clothing and toys. There’s also a Gudetama-themed café in Osaka, Japan.

Many people identify with Gudetama, calling the cute little yolk everything from their “spirit animal” to their “kin.” Gudetama’s fans are devoted, and why wouldn’t they be? There’s something delightful about Gudetama—maybe it’s those tiny yellow butt cheeks—that’s an undeniable awe-factor. Meanwhile, Gudetama’s struggle to get motivated is all too relatable. Here are seven times Gudetama was all of us.

1. Chilling Out

We can’t be on-the-go all the time. Everyone needs to relax every once and awhile, or you could run the risk of burnout. Whether it be curling up with a good book, taking a bath, or watching your favorite show, we all deserve some time to chill like Gudetama.

2. Procrastinating

We all have obligations—like chores, school, work, etc.—but sometimes gathering the motivation to accomplish the task itself takes too much effort. Here’s where procrastination hits us. By putting off today what we could do tomorrow, we feel a certain kinship with Gudetama, a professional procrastinator.

3. Having Cravings

Gudetama loves soy sauce! It’s one of the few things that motivates our favorite lazy yolk. We all have that special food that can help us get through a difficult task. For some it’s something sweet, like chocolate or ice cream, while for others it’s something savory, like chips or pizza. With soy sauce being Gudetama’s food of choice, there’s one win for the savory side.

4. Wanting More Sleep

We all need sleep. It’s essential to mental, physical, and emotional health, but we’re continuously being told we’re not getting enough. Waking up can be tough, and first thing in the morning, that snooze button is tempting. Just like our friend Gudetama, who couldn’t use five more minutes of sleep?

5. Feeling Bored

Despite having posts to view, shows and movies to stream, and limitless articles to read, sometimes we still feel bored. Almost nothing can spark a sense of creativity or motivation when you’re in the doldrums. Gudetama is very familiar with this ‘meh’ kind of feeling.

6. Needing Alone Time

Whether it’s personal space that allows you the room to breathe or a sense of quiet that gives you time to think, spending some quality time with yourself is beneficial to mental health. Just like Gudetama, we all need some “me-time.”

7. Being Lazy

Finally, we’ve reached Gudetama’s primary trait! Let’s face it, sometimes we just feel lazy, and it doesn’t need further explanation. If you think about it, taking some time to laze about could be just what we need to get motivated.

Perfectly kawaii on the outside and a bundle of all-too-relatable feelings on the inside, Gudetama is the cutest rendition of sloth we’ve seen. It’s not hard to see why so many people relate to Gudetama, because, let’s be honest, we can all be a lazy egg sometimes.
