7 Binge-Worthy Food Anime

by Gyeongyeong Kim

If you’re a fan of Japanese anime, you might have come across a food scene at least once. When Chihiro’s parents eat rou yuan at a food market in Spirited Away, and when Howl cooks bacon and eggs for breakfast in Howl’s Moving Castle, I’m sure we all had a hard time going through that mouth-watering scenes. Food in anime often feels more real than the food in reality, sometimes hours pass by just by watching it. It's especially the best way to kill time when you got nothing to do at home. So, today I want to introduce you to some food anime our Bokksu community has shared and snacks that will satisfy your cravings!

1. Food Wars (食戟のソーマ)

Teenager Soma Yukihira enters the one of the most renowned culinary schools, Totsuki Saryu Culinary Institute in Tokyo in order to become the best chef and exceed his father’s cooking skill. Soma soon becomes one of the ten best students in his school and in order to secure his position, he goes through food wars with the other top students. You’ll notice that there is a lot of meat in this anime, so make sure to prepare Scone: Barbeque Flavor when watching Food Wars.

2. Isekai Shokudo (異世界食堂)

Isekai Shokudo, meaning a "restaurant to another world," mainly focuses on Western food cooked in Japanese style. Although the restaurant only opens on weekdays officially, it also opens on Saturday secretly for creatures from another world. Japan has a lot of fusion food such as napolitan spaghetti and hambagu, and this anime features those food mainly. That said, this anime and Dark Matcha Otona No Amasa Kit Kat makes a perfect pair.

3. Isekai Izakaya (異世界居酒屋)

This Izakaya is located in a different world, Aiteria. With three different staffs, the chef Nobuyuki offers customers Japanese food that comforts people. At the end of every episode, just like Kodoku No Gurume (another Japanese series we recommend), they visit the actual izakaya in Japan that has the same menu they featured in that episode, which makes us crave the food more! Moreover, since it is about Japanese food and izakaya, there are numerous seafood dishes such as fried mackerel and eel over rice. That's why we recommend Red Snapper Crackers when watching this anime, especially if you’re a seafood lover!

4. Kakuriyo (かくりよの宿飯)

A college girl Aoi can see Ayakashi, a Japanese traditional monster that lives in water, just like her grandfather. One day, she meets a hungry Ayakashi in a shrine and cooks for him. As soon as she feeds him, he kidnaps Aoi and takes her to the monster's realm saying that her grandfather owes him something and that she has to marry him to pay his debt. But, Aoi persuades him to have her work in his B&B instead and starts to cook for the guests. From Ayakashi to Aoi’s food such as Kaisen Don and onigiri and miso soup, this anime reflects a lot of traditional Japanese food culture. Watch Kakuriyo with our Onigiri Senbei, and you’ll feel like you’ve travelled to Japan!

5. Piacevole!

A junior high school student Nanase starts a part-time job at the Italian restaurant Pesta. Learning about Italian cuisine, Nanase realizes that she wants to be a nutritionist in the future. Although this anime seems weird at first because of a fifth-grade manager and all the other interesting characters, you’ll soon find yourself craving hot tomato sauce spaghetti with lots of parmesan cheese on top. Before your craving gets you, have Goddess Ruby Pocky within your reach. Parmesan and cheddar cheese in the biscuit as well as fruity ruby chocolate will satisfy your craving.

6. Working!!

Working!! is about people working in a family restaurant in Hokkaido. Everyone has either social or psychological problems and gets into trouble every time. Yet, working together, they build strong relationships and heal each other. Not only each episode is full of comedy, but it’s also full of lots of Japanese style family restaurant dishes. I love it especially when they have Japanese Western desserts such as strawberry parfait and custard pudding. Our Japanese Snack Market has some family-restaurant-like snacks such as Giant Calpico: Strawberry and Gudetama Custard Chocolate, so make sure to check them out!

7. Silver Spoon (銀の匙)

Yugo fails the high school entrance exam and enters an agricultural high school in Hokkaido. He does not know anything about agriculture, but slowly starts to find himself enjoying farming and appreciating all the crops he harvests. With all the crops he and his classmates harvested, they cook simple but delicious meals. If you watch them eating tamago kake gohan, a traditional Japanese breakfast, you might rush to the fridge to find an egg. Before that happens, have Gudetama Tamago Kake Gohan Puff Snack ready right next to you.

This weekend, if you have nothing planned yet and have no idea what to do, check out one of these Japanese food anime recommended by our fabulous Bokksu community. But make sure to prepare some Japanese snacks to satisfy your cravings because otherwise you would have to listen to your stomach growling all the time.
