Kanji (Chinese characters used in Japanese) is notoriously difficult for Japanese natives and foreigners alike, but this yunomi (tea cup) is here to help.

Designed by Japanese graphic designer Ando Mari, this sushi-themed cup cleverly uses typography to incorporate English and katakana (Japanese characters for foreign words) translations within the kanji strokes. At first glance, you'll just see the fish names written in kanji, but if you look closely you’ll see the colorful English (yellow letters) and katakana (red letters) readings of the names.

This cup was first made as a novelty item for a sushi restaurant in Nagoya, but has become more widely available in 2022 by the designer in hopes that people everywhere can enjoy delicious Japanese fish. Whether it be for tea lovers, sushi connoisseurs, fish fiends, or those studying Japanese - this unique cup is a great gift!
