What Is Ginza Six? Tokyo’s Ultimate Luxury Complex

What Is Ginza Six? Tokyo’s Ultimate Luxury Complex

Ginza Six is Tokyo's largest luxury shopping complex. Opened in April 2017, the mall features over 241 stores, a rooftop garden, and several cultural facilities. Ginza Six, also known as G Six, is a hub of high-end commerce and modern Japanese culture. It’s located in Tokyo’s Ginza district, specifically Ginza 6-chome, according to the Japanese addressing system. The entire complex is about 500,000 square feet, making it the largest retail area in Ginza.

Four companies joined forces to develop Ginza Six. They were L Catterton Real Estate, J. Front Retailing, Mori Building Company, and Sumitomo Corporation. During the inauguration ceremony, several important figures were in attendance, including the Prime Minister of Japan at the time, Shinzo Abe, and Tokyo’s current Governor, Koike Yuriko. Ginza Six is more than a shopping complex. To Japanese people, it represents the commercial and architectural advancement of Tokyo Metropolis.

Architectural Marvel: Design and Structure

Architectural Marvel: Design and Structure

The geographical site on which Ginza Six stands was once the location of a Matsuzakaya branch, which was Ginza district’s first-ever department store. G Six’s design and construction were born from the vision of architect Yoshio Taniguchi. Born in 1937, the late Yoshio became one of the world’s most famous contemporary artists after he redesigned the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He was tasked with designing the mega complex over a decade later.

For Ginza Six, Yoshio Taniguchi used a postmodern architectural style, blending traditional Japanese elements with modern aesthetics. The building’s façade draws inspiration from noren, a traditional Japanese store curtain placed at the entrance of shops. From outside, Ginza Six looks like two opposing structures merged into one building. The upper part consists of stainless-steel eaves that serve as the roofs of the stores on each floor. Its lower part features a façade design made up of the individual designs of six luxury brand shops. We’ll discuss it later in this post.

Ginza Six is 56 meters tall, 120 meters long, and 83 meters deep. Its interior lattice work is also inspired by traditional Japanese craft. The complex is designed to resemble its district and features alleys, green spaces, and squares. There are 241+ stores distributed across 13 stories and three basement floors. The 13th floor has a large garden on its roof.

The lower part of Ginza Six is reserved for the official flagship stores of six luxury brands. Each boutique has a façade that represents part of its interpretation of the traditional noren divider. Together, all six noren façades form the main frontage of the building. The following is an overview of each luxury brand store:

  • Fendi: This luxury fashion store covers four floors, starting from the basement (B1F) to the third floor (3F). The Fendi brand offers all categories of fashion items and lifestyle goods for men and women, including accessories.

  • Dior: The House of Dior Ginza has five floors (B1F to 4F) in the complex. It offers a wide variety of high-end jewelry, timepieces, outfits, shoes, and bags for both men and women.

  • Céline: This French fashion house only consists of two floors (1F and 2F). You can find bags, shoes, and other fashion pieces.

  • Van Cleef & Arpels: It takes up three floors (B1F to 2F). The chic interior design sets it apart from other stores. Browse this store’s collection of exquisite watches and jewelry.

  • Saint Laurent: This is a three-floor (B1F to 2F) contemporary French-style fashion house.

  • Valentino: This is the largest store in the complex. It takes up five floors (B1F to 4F) and offers all categories of fashion products you can think of, including jewelry and accessories.

Besides those high-end international brands, Ginza Six is home to luxury Japanese brands. There’s Ca4la (unique Japanese hats), Ground Y (genderless and ageless fashion items), and Attachment (clothes with minimalist designs). You can also find top beauty brands in the complex, such as Peek-a-Boo Aveda (hair salon), Cle de Peau Beaute (cosmetics shop), and Maison Décolleté (cosmetics shop).
